About the Event

The City of Subiaco proudly presents the 2024 Craig Silvey Award for Young Writers. This award recognises and celebrates the talent and potential of WA's young writers from year one to year twelve.   The City of Subiaco has been running an annual award for young writers for the past 30 years with 2024 marking the second year of the award’s new patron, Craig Silvey.  Aspiring young writers are encouraged to start planning – or plotting – their entry with innovation, creativity and originality front of mind.

The Craig Silvey Award for Young Writers is open to Western Australian school students in year one to twelve. Stories submitted must be an original piece of prose writing, no more than 2000 words in length.  Entries must be the sole work of the entrant. Entries may be accepted from individuals or from teachers on behalf of their students. Entry is limited to one per person.  Entries open on Friday 19 July 2024 at 9.30am. .

Terms and Conditions 

Award opens Friday 19 July at 9.30am and closes Monday 12 August at 5.30pm. • Entries are open to Western Australian school students in years one to twelve. • Stories submitted must be an original piece of prose writing, no more than 2000 words in  length. • Entries must be the sole work of the entrant, group or joint entries will not be considered. • Entry is limited to one per person. • Finalists will be advised by phone or email.  • Results will be published on the City of Subiaco website by the end of September 2024. • Due to the high number of entries received for this award each year, stories cannot be  returned. • Winning stories will be on display for one month at Subiaco Library from Tuesday 24 September until Sunday 27 October and be published online. Prize details Prizes are donated on behalf of the City of Subiaco and award sponsors. Prizes are made up  of vouchers and gift items. How to enter The online entry form will be available from 9.30am on Friday 19 July. Entries may be  accepted from individuals or from teachers on behalf of their students. To submit your story  electronically, upload your entry at the time of registration. To submit a physical copy, submit  to Subiaco Library with a printed confirmation of entry before 5.30pm on Monday 12 August.
